The 2025 NAIOP Golden Shovel Case Competition is an annual head-to-head competition between UC Berkeley and Stanford University, where both schools present innovative real estate development proposals tackling major urban challenges. Our Cal team, led by me as captain, went head-to-head with Stanford, presenting a bold proposal for the 2035 San Francisco World Expo at Hunters Point and Candlestick Point. Our vision centered around transforming these underdeveloped areas into a vibrant, sustainable district, including the creation of the world’s largest high-rise park atop the Hunters Point Gantry Crane, a robust ferry network connecting the site to the broader Bay Area, and lasting infrastructure to support the site’s long-term growth. This Expo will spur the largest redevelopment in San Francisco’s history, with a focus on housing, innovation, and community revitalization. After a highly competitive battle, our team emerged victorious, winning 5 out of 6 scoring criteria, demonstrating the strength of our proposal and its potential to reshape the southeastern waterfront for generations to come.
