About
Dan Whelan is a third-generation Bay Area native and real estate professional with a passion for shaping the future of the Bay Area through innovative and thoughtful development. He recently completed his Master of Real Estate Development + Design (MRED+D) at UC Berkeley, where he deepened his expertise at the intersection of development, finance, policy, and design. Dan led UC Berkeley’s team to victory over Stanford in the NAIOP Golden Shovel competition and was honored with both the Capstone Honors Award and the Outstanding Leadership Award for his time as the Co-President of his Class and the Real Estate Development Association.
Prior to Berkeley, Dan spent four years at Northmarq’s San Francisco office as a Senior Investment Analyst, where he structured over $750 million in creative debt and equity financing across all major asset types and analyzed more than $1.5 billion in real estate opportunities across North America. His experience spans development, brokerage, construction, entitlements, and asset management through prior roles at Prometheus, Greystar, Marcus & Millichap, and Edgile Properties in London, among others.
Dan’s passion for real estate extends beyond his professional life. He is deeply committed to serving his local communities, as evidenced by his support for the Housing Industry Foundation (HIF), a local real estate non-profit working to prevent homelessness in the Bay Area. Dan’s dedication was recognized when he became the youngest member to be brought on to the HIF Board of Directors in the organization’s 35+ year history. He was entrusted with the responsibility of founding and serving as the Chairman of the Building Leaders Initiative (BLI). The mission of the BLI is to grow support for HIF’s homeless prevention programs by getting emerging real estate professionals knowledgeable about and involved in HIF’s programs through educational, networking, and charitable events.
A proud third-generation Cal Bear and Santa Clara Bronco, Dan blends a deep local knowledge with a global perspective. Outside of real estate, he’s an avid surfer, scuba diver, and self-taught woodworker who enjoys designing and building custom furniture.
